We recently had a long chat in the office about the do’s and don’ts of CV writing when applying for jobs in the private staffing sector. There were quite a few recurring pet peeves, so we decided to show you how to avoid making mistakes on your cv when applying for new domestic staffing roles.

Keep reading to see how you can optimise your cv for the best chance of securing your next dream job.

Before we get started it seems imperative to point out that simply writing ‘interested’ on a social media post for a new role doesn’t cut it to be considered. You need to follow the process set out by the role you’re applying for. To be taken seriously as a candidate you need to prove you can follow instructions.

Tip 1

Make your CV and cover letter relevant to the role you are applying for.

If you are applying for the role of Head Housekeeper, make sure you prioritise and include all relevant experience for that role.

Your cover letter should explain why you know you are a great housekeeper, summarise your experience to date and showcase what you think you can bring to the specific role you are applying for.

Remember the client wants to hire a housekeeper so ensure they can see why you are the right candidate to consider.

Tip 2

Bullet points

At Silver Swan Recruitment we love it when CVs arrive bullet-pointed. Did you know the average recruiter spends 7 seconds looking at your cv? You need to make sure your experience is quick and easy to read.

BOOM – Chauffeur for UHNW family – April 2015 – June 2019

BOOM – Butler for VIP principal – January 2010 – June 2022

BOOM – Private nanny – VIP family – December 2017- Present

Under each heading in bullet points briefly list your duties in that role. You get the gist – don’t let your valuable experience get lost in endless paragraphs of text.

Tip 3

List your experience in order with the most recent first and work backwards

It makes sense, doesn’t it? A family looking for a nanny aren’t going to want to see the job you were doing 20 years ago first, they want to see your most recent experience – show off about what you’ve been doing lately not what weekend job you had when you were at school.

Tip 4

Use a professional email address

By professional we mean first name and surname or similar and NOT ilovedogs@! As much as we love dogs too it’s not relevant and it’s not professional.

You’re applying for roles in domestic staffing not emailing your friends.

Tip 5

Make sure you include your contact details

This may sound ridiculously obvious, but we come across CVs without them all the time. Include your phone number and email address so we can contact you – you won’t get very far if we can’t.

Tip 6

Include a recent headshot

We know it’s old-fashioned but include a headshot. You are applying for private staffing jobs it’s normal for clients to want to see how potential candidates present themselves and you will most likely be asked for one anyway.

Tip 7

Be prepared to send us a video

Part of the recruitment process at Silver Swan is to send a video of you talking about your experience. It’s a great way to showcase your personality and big yourself up.

It’s a lot less scary than it sounds and gives the client an opportunity to understand you as a candidate over simply reading your cv. Don’t worry though, we will talk you through it on a call beforehand and it doesn’t need to be very long.

Tip 8

Consistent formatting

There is nothing worse than seeing a mismatched, jumbled cv full of different font types and different size texts. Use the same font and utilise bold or underlined text for headings.

And that’s that! There are a million things we could point out but as a group of recruiters, we decided these are the main ones that ensure our team receive your application with a smile on their face.

Thank you for reading and remember we would LOVE to help you secure your next role in private staffing!
