A few years back a review in the Telegraph praised Samoens as one of the best secrets of the French Alps. Its chocolate box beauty rivals Chamonix, Meribel and Megeve with barely any trace of obvious British tourism. That said, there is an amazing community of seasonnaires and local that make working a summer or ski season in Samoens, a real home from home. The atmosphere in the town is warm, welcoming and vibrant – which is no wonder why tourists come back year after year and many workers end up staying year-round.
Partly because it sits quite low at 700m, Samoens is a beautiful and authentic farming town in the Savoie region. To access the impressive Grand Massif Ski area you set off in the Grand Massif Express at the edge of the village. In 8 minutes you’ll be right in the heart of one of the biggest ski areas in France that link Samoens, Les Carroz, Morillon, Sixt and Flaine. With off-piste skiing to challenge the Courchevel Couloirs or the Chamonix valley such as the Gers Bowl, it is a secret mecca for adrenaline junkies. Speed riding and parapenting are also really big in the Grand Massif and if you’ve been to the area you’ll understand in an instant. With is close proximity to some other top resorts such as La Clusaz and Morzine, the views from the summit are unsurpassable. Mont Blanc can be seen clearly from the highest point in Flaine at the top of the famous Cascades run (mentioned in our top 5 ski runs!) and the resort offers a helicopter day excursion over the surrounding mountain ranges.
Job opportunities in Samoens offer a really unique ski season experience as you won’t feel like you are 1 in the masses in a largely English spoken ski resort with the same clients each week. The town is so diverse with the different activities and sports it celebrates, the people who live there and the many festivals held all year round. It’s also a real destination for foodies with a mouth-watering local cuisine showcased across its fine dining restaurants as well as being dotted with creperies and unique chocolatiers. In the evenings, the best bars include Bar Savoie and Covey’s Pub – on special events like New Year’s Eve and season openings it’s wise to advise your guests that they’ll need to purchase tickets in advance!
