St Martin de Belleville… off the beaten track of the Three Valleys

St Martin De Belleville sits at a modest 1450m, much lower than its 3 big sisters Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens. However, with speedy access to the same 600km of piste and a 6 seater chair plonking you at the top of where the Val Thorens Valley meets Meribel Mottaret in just 15 minutes, this beautiful antique village has a lot more to boast than just its rustic appeal.

A familiar scattering of well lived-in farmhouse-turned-chalets surrounds a 17th Century church in the centre of the village. St Martin De Belleville appears completely unaltered from its old-fashioned Savoyard roots and its pre-ski resort history only dates back to the 1980’s when chairlifts were put in place to link this quiet French farming village to Meribel and Les Menuires.

The surrounding ski area also offers unrivalled skiing for everyone. Jerusalem, a rolling red run trickling right down into the village from Meribel is a long-standing favourite of many, and the off-piste in between St Martin and Les Menuires is one of the best-kept secrets in the 3 Valleys.

For a relatively small village of the 3 Valleys, St Martin is bustling with some of the cosiest and best restaurants in the area. There’s also a few local favourite bars, The Pourquoi Pas, Le Joker and Brewski’s – the most lively spot in town with live music and occasional karaoke. However, it’s so well connected you can easily reach the Follie Douce in Val Thorens for a cheeky spot of apres or get a taxi to other villages in the Val Thorens Valley like Les Menuires.

Although they may not come for the nightlife or the ski-in-ski-out access, there’s a really close-knit chalet community in the village, where returning holiday makers and seasonnaires alike make St Martin a friendly, welcoming and a vibrant little ski resort for foodies, keen skiers and those seeking a cosy home from home.

One of the most beautiful ski resorts in France, Samoens
A few years back a review in the Telegraph praised Samoens as one of the best secrets of the French Alps.
