The role of a Stewardess on a yacht is a popular role and is often the best way to enter the yachting industry. You will need to have strong 5* service experience and be willing to work hard long hours and to an incredibly high standard. To move into yachting, you will need to have your STCW and ENG1 and will need to have gained relevant land-based experience ready to transfer onto a yacht.
The smaller yachts will have just 1 or 2 steward/esses where you will be responsible for all of the interior – service, housekeeping and laundry. You may also be required to cook if necessary. The larger yachts will have interior teams lead by a Chief Stewardess. You will, therefore, be a 2nd or 3rd stew and will normally work on rotation, spending periods of time in each area of the interior before moving onto the next area. Positions for Stewards on a yacht are also available, maybe not in the volumes of Stewardess roles, but they are certainly available for those Stewards with good service experience.
Presentation is very important when working on yachts, visible tattoos and piercings are discouraged and you will need to be well presented in a clean uniform at all times. You must be a team player, happy to do work long hours and not be afraid of hard work.
